The HHREC MemoryKeeper Story Hour will return on Wednesday, May 7th on Zoom starting at 7pm EST, as Audrey Reich will appear to share the remarkable story of her mother’s struggle to survive the Holocaust. Born into a Russian Jewish family that fled the Russian Revolution in search of safety and opportunity, her family’s journey took them from Harbin to Shanghai, where they experienced the Japanese invasion, the arrival of Jewish refugees from Europe, and the civil war between Nationalist and Communist forces. Through treasured photos and documents, Audrey brings to life her mother’s experiences, the losses her family endured, and their forced displacement in 1950 when they had to seek refuge once again in Australia, the only country that would take them. Inspired by these stories, Audrey traveled with her family to China to uncover the remnants of Shanghai’s once-thriving Jewish community, a city that provided shelter to nearly 25,000 Jews during the Holocaust.
