Please join us for a book talk with Prof. Elisheva Carlebach on: A Woman is Responsible for Everything
Dr. Elisheva Carlebach will discuss her book
A Woman Is Responsible for Everything,
co-authored with Debra Kaplan, which
explores the lives of Jewish women in early
modern Europe. Drawing on newly
uncovered archival sources, the book
reveals how women of a wide range of social
backgrounds shaped their families,
communities, economies, and religious life.
By recovering these voices and experiences,
it offers a richer and more nuanced
understanding of Jewish communal life and
the early modern Jewish past.
Elisheva Carlebach is the Salo Wittmayer Baron
Professor of Jewish History, Culture, and Society, at
Columbia University. She specializes in the cultural,
intellectual, and religious history of the Jews in Early
Modern Europe.
