SUMMARY:Beth El Synagogue - Open Beit Midrash Scholar Limmud with Dr. Eisen
DESCRIPTION:\nOpen Beit Midrash Scholar Limmud with Dr. Arnold
Eisen\n"Seeking the Hiding God" A personal Theological Essay\nTuesday\,
 January 21st\, 7:30pm Dinner\, 8:00pm Class\nAfter decades of studying and
teaching modern Jewish religious thought\, Arnold Eisen—one of the
leading scholars of American Judaism—offers a deeply honest and
accessible theological essay. Resigned to the limits of human understanding
of God\, Eisen instead explores the search for the “hiding God\,” the
meaning of fleeting encounters with the Creator\, and the acts of justice
and compassion that define human partnership with the divine. Written to
engage readers of diverse Jewish backgrounds (and interested non-Jews)\,
the book invites reflection on profound questions of faith that have gained
urgency in the wake of the COVID pandemic and the attack by Hamas last
 October.\n\nAbout Dr. Eisen\n\nBA\, University of Pennsylvania\; BPhil\,
 Oxford University\; PhD\, The Hebrew University of Jerusalem\n\nArnold M.
Eisen\, one of the world’s foremost authorities on American Judaism\, is
chancellor emeritus of The Jewish Theological Seminary and professor of
Jewish Thought. Professor Eisen became chancellor in 2007 and stepped down
in spring 2020 to return to teaching and scholarship as a full-time member
of the JTS faculty. During his tenure as chancellor\, he transformed the
education of religious\, pedagogical\, professional\, and lay leaders for
North American Jewry\, with a focus on graduating highly skilled\,
innovative leaders who bring Judaism alive in ways that speak authentically
to Jews at a time of rapid and far-reaching change.\n\n\n\n The Open Beit
Midrash Scholar Series is funded by The Yvette and Herman Gordon Century
Fund for Adult Teaching and Learning. Please consider making a contribution
to this fund to enhance our adult education programs here. To sponsor a
